The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Jack Westover went at slot 231, a good 89 picks before the board was ready.
On value alone, James makes the weekend a net positive. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
They barely believed it either: Michael Penix Jr. still on the board at the 34th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kiran Amegadjie. A need, and now a little less of one.
DJ James in slot 103 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Matt Goncalves at pick 137 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Marcus Harris at No. 180 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jha'Quan Jackson slid further than he should have, and the 193rd pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Jack Westover in Round 7, Pick 11 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
