The Dolphins went off the board in a big way for Eric Gentry, 129 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Getting Slaughter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a building block for the line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Blake Miller in No. 47; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nice patience on Keionte Scott, who had no business lasting to the 75th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
A tight end of that caliber at pick No. 87 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Jake Slaughter still on the board at pick 90. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Elijah Sarratt in No. 93 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Ted Hurst. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Michael Trigg at the 113th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Joe Royer, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
They liked Demond Claiborne enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 151. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Jeff Caldwell at the 187th pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Eric Gentry at Round 7, Pick 7 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A big swing on Robert Spears-Jennings at pick 227, well ahead of any board in the building. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaiah Jatta. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Enrique Cruz Jr.. A need, and now a little less of one.
