The Chargers put a flag in the ground for Jackson Powers-Johnson, 25 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wilson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 7 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value.
T'Vondre Sweat at the 37th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jackson Powers-Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach on Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 5; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They read the board right and Roman Wilson was the payoff at slot 105. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Ben Sinnott at No. 142 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Sam Hartman in pick 183. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cody Schrader a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
