The Chargers bet big and early on Darius Robinson, 138 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
On value alone, McConkey makes the weekend a net positive. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 16 they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
Value with a capital V on Johnny Wilson in Round 2, Pick 6, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Darius Robinson in slot 60 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for TreVeyon Henderson in No. 70, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jordan Morgan at the 86th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Cade Stover, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Ladd McConkey in slot 106 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Roman Wilson at the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braden Fiske this early at Round 5, Pick 7. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cody Schrader in pick 184 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Malachi Moore at the 195th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They liked Kamal Hadden enough to skip the value, taking him in the 227th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
