When the story of this class is written, it opens with Payton Wilson at pick No. 24, a reach of 46 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The final tally is a middling C+.
That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: linebacker settled and 2 of 8 of the wish list covered. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
They reached a country mile for Payton Wilson at the 24th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick 56; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Justin Eboigbe at par in Round 4, Pick 24, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A straight-up fair deal on Curtis Jacobs at pick No. 174, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Xavier Thomas in No. 212, miles early. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Donell Harris Jr. in slot 245 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
