Nobody else had Carson Steele anywhere near No. 226. The Chargers did, by 27 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. However the rest shakes out, Holker at that price is a win they earned.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take T'Vondre Sweat this early at slot 37. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach for Blake Corum in No. 69; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 105 with a little surplus value in Donovan Edwards. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nice patience on Dallin Holker, who had no business lasting to the 142nd pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on Sam Hartman in the Round 6 slot, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Carson Steele at pick 226 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
