The Chargers did not so much draft Cody Schrader as overpay for him, 54 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Zinter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a security blanket over the middle. A clean fit for the roster.
Chop Robinson at pick No. 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid up for T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on Blake Corum, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Zak Zinter slid further than he should have, and the 105th pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mike Sainristil in No. 142. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, Cody Schrader in pick No. 183 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Carson Steele at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
