The steal of the weekend belongs to the Dolphins and Singleton: B+.

Call it larceny. Nicholas Singleton sat on the board until the 163rd pick, and the Dolphins did not need to be asked twice. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.

The Turner pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback, edge rusher and other spots went begging.

They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Malaki Starks · S · rank 17
In No. 25 they get a ballhawk on the back end, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Xavier Watts · S · rank 48
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Xavier Watts at safety with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 39
They read the board right and Jihaad Campbell was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. The roster fit checks out.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 82
A reasonable price with a little left over, Barrett Carter in the 87th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Jordan James · RB · rank 53
A running back of that caliber at the 97th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.34 · Pick 98 · Jake Majors · C · rank 93
Jake Majors in Round 3, Pick 34 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.13 · Pick 114 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 96
Elic Ayomanor in pick 114 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.25 · Pick 126 · Kyren Lacy · WR · rank 119
Kyren Lacy at pick No. 126 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.32 · Pick 133 · Shemar Turner · DL · rank 171
Shemar Turner at the 133rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.12 · Pick 149 · Jeffrey Bassa · LB · rank 120
Taking Jeffrey Bassa in pick 149 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.17 · Pick 154 · Joshua Gray · OG · rank 173
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joshua Gray. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.26 · Pick 163 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 100
The board fumbled Nicholas Singleton all the way to Round 5, Pick 26, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
