You build a draft on nights like this. Dwight McGlothern had no business being available in the Round 6 slot, and the Dolphins did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Hall Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
The board fumbled Kool-Aid McKinstry all the way to Round 2, Pick 17, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid sticker price for Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 55, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Michael Hall Jr. at slot 65 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Brandon Dorlus at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in No. 97. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tyler Davis at pick 111 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fair-plus on James Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Javon Foster is a better player than the 131st overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Braiden McGregor in the Round 6 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dwight McGlothern at No. 208 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They barely believed it either: Cornelius Johnson still on the board at the 214th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Edefuan Ulofoshio in slot 241; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
