When the story of this class is written, it opens with Anthony Belton at the 134th overall pick, a reach of 122 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Singleton. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a centerpiece for the ground game at fair value.
In slot 14 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 21st pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nic Scourton in the 37th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jalen Royals this early at the 42nd pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nick Emmanwori at pick No. 53 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They let Tyler Booker come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Danny Stutsman in No. 84, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Emery Jones Jr. at pick 92 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Cade Klubnik, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Tyler Warren in Round 3, Pick 34, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A big swing on Patrick Payton at the 99th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Nazir Stackhouse in No. 103 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Barrett Carter in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Jaeden Roberts at Round 4, Pick 4, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Raheim Sanders at the 109th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They read the board right and Maxwell Hairston was the payoff at pick 111. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Daylen Everette. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into Anthony Belton at pick No. 134, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jamon Dumas-Johnson in slot 140 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Seth McLaughlin in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Nicholas Singleton at pick No. 242 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
