Call it larceny. Jake Majors sat on the board until slot 217, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
The Mellott reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 17 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value.
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mykel Williams in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tre Harris at pick No. 38. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jalon Walker at slot 49 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board had Trey Amos higher than the 69th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They will replay Tyler Warren at the 76th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Luke Kandra at No. 105 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Xavier Watts here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A running back of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 6 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Patrick Bryant at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jake Majors at pick No. 217 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Tim Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Tommy Mellott in pick 241 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
