Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent Round 7, Pick 39 on Frank Crum, a name most had 37 spots down the list. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Spending an early pick on linebacker with tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Jordan Morgan at No. 43 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Braden Fiske at the 58th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Payton Wilson at linebacker with tight end open.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at Round 3, Pick 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Fair-plus on Trey Benson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach on Jarrian Jones in slot 127; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Mason McCormick in No. 146, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Khristian Boyd in the 169th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Myles Cole at the 182nd pick, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Joe Milton III at pick 188 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Jordan Magee in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Trevin Wallace in Round 6, Pick 44 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They paid up for Kimani Vidal at pick No. 245 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A slide stopped in slot 255, with Jalen Sundell worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Joshua Cephus at the 256th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
