They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop.
Every board in the league had Paul lower, and that gap is the story. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value with a capital V on Jordan Morgan in Round 2, Pick 16, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Devontez Walker in slot 67 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Bralen Trice in pick No. 78 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
DJ James in the 96th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cedric Gray in No. 100, miles early. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Brenden Rice at the 114th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tip Reiman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nehemiah Pritchett at the 152nd overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached into another round for Matthew Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
