The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Phil Mafah, the No. 166 name on the board, in slot 220.

The cost of the Griffith reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The phones were where this weekend was really won.

The Patriots indulged a want in Campbell while a need in edge rusher and quarterback stayed open. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Tetairoa McMillan · WR · rank 5
In pick No. 12 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.15 · Pick 15 · Will Johnson · CB · rank 10
In No. 15 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 25
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in Round 2, Pick 12, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 40
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Jihaad Campbell while clear needs at edge rusher and quarterback sat open.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 71
Andrew Mukuba in slot 77 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Luke Kandra · OG · rank 108
Luke Kandra at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Mason Taylor · TE · rank 98
They barely believed it either: Mason Taylor still on the board at the 143rd pick. It fills a real need, too.
R5.11 · Pick 148 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 113
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at the 148th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.31 · Pick 168 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 175
They paid sticker price for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 168, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 211
Jared Wilson at the 217th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Phil Mafah · RB · rank 166
Phil Mafah in pick No. 220 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
R7.25 · Pick 241 · Thor Griffith · DL · rank 275
A big swing on Thor Griffith at the 241st pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
