This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jake Slaughter, the No. 54 name on the board, stolen at No. 89. No fireworks, but a solid B.
It is not that McNeil-Warren is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
The Tucker reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 26th overall pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing A.J. Haulcy in slot 60. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman and running back to take Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, a safety that was not the priority.
Jake Slaughter in No. 89 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tacario Davis at pick No. 108 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nadame Tucker at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Aamil Wagner in pick 170; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kaden Wetjen slid further than he should have, and Round 7, Pick 7 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The roster fit checks out.
Steal is underselling it; Miles Kitselman at slot 239 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Luke Altmyer at the 241st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
