Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Chase Lundt got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 238. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They are betting Rucker proves the room right and everyone else wrong. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
They jumped the gun on Marcus Mbow, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They went early on Tai Felton in the 69th overall pick, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kaimon Rucker in the 77th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They read the board right and Sebastian Castro was the payoff at pick No. 106. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 5, Pick 6 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Oronde Gadsden II at No. 217 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Donovan Edwards in pick 220 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Chase Lundt all the way to pick No. 238, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
