The Packers torched the value chart for Braelon Allen, taking him 58 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Williams pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, cornerback and other spots still on the board. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
The dealing was even money, start to finish.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a downhill hitter at safety. More want than need.
They reached into another round for Jonathon Brooks, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 25 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Sedrick Van Pran at No. 88 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Braelon Allen at pick 93 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A curious use of slot 125. Edge rusher, cornerback and other spots needed the pick; a safety in James Williams did not.
They jumped the gun on Javion Cohen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Joshua Cephus in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steele Chambers at the 217th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They took Trevor Keegan at par in pick 219, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jayson Jones in Round 7, Pick 26, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Caedan Wallace in the 251st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
