Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chargers were there to profit. Jarrian Jones, the No. 136 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 181. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Nourzad pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Adding Jake Browning by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 17 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Mike Sainristil at No. 69 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in pick 105. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Ben Sinnott at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let Johnny Wilson come to them and pounced at the 136th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Hunter Nourzad in pick No. 145 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Jarrian Jones was still sitting there in the 181st pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Cedric Johnson at par in slot 225, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Tylan Grable at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
