The board owed the Dolphins one, and it paid up: Jalon Walker, the No. 24 name on the board, sitting there at No. 115 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The back end got a real overhaul.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 13 they get an island corner at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Taking Malaki Starks in Round 2, Pick 16 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Good price on Jake Majors in No. 98, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
They went early on Luke Kandra in pick 99, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at the 115th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Jaeden Roberts at the 149th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a tight end like Mason Taylor reach pick No. 156 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Addison West in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tim Smith at pick 231 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Joey Slackman at pick No. 251 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
