When the story of this class is written, it opens with Nick Gargiulo at slot 246, a reach of 34 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Bertrand pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A reach on Xavier Worthy in No. 56; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on MarShawn Lloyd in the 87th pick, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Gabriel Murphy at pick No. 92 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They did well to land Javon Foster in the 125th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylan Ford well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Keith Randolph Jr.. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
JD Bertrand slipping to pick 233 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Darius Muasau in slot 244; a little patience would have been rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Nick Gargiulo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
