Nobody had Anthony Gould this high, and it is not close. The Chargers reached 43 spots to get him at the 223rd overall pick.
Melton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Brock Bowers at pick No. 5 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Chop Robinson in the 37th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Blake Corum went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Leonard Taylor III. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Max Melton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 8 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A real head-scratcher, Anthony Gould in the 223rd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taulia Tagovailoa at pick No. 253 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Darius Muasau in the 256th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
