The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Drake Nugent at the 174th pick regardless, 37 picks early. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
However the rest shakes out, Paul at that price is a win they earned. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson at pick 56 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Patrick Paul at pick No. 87 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Drake Nugent in the 174th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Ryan Flournoy higher than Round 6, Pick 41, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Emani Bailey at the 233rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tyler Owens at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
