Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Browns spent slot 221 on Nick Barrett, a name most had 33 spots down the list. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They banked enough surplus on Lane to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 25 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
They paid up for Jadarian Price at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had Keionte Scott higher than the 70th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Malachi Fields, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 25. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kamari Ramsey slipping to pick 91 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Connor Lew at Round 4, Pick 7 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ja'Kobi Lane at the 126th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good price on Chris McClellan in No. 146, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaiah World in pick 149. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jimmy Rolder at slot 206 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Riley Nowakowski at the Round 7 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Nick Barrett in pick No. 221 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A clean, defensible pick in the 226th overall pick with a little surplus value in TJ Hall. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
