Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Devontez Walker got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at the 130th pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The cost of the Nelson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Dallas Turner is a better player than pick No. 30 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at Round 2, Pick 30 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dominick Puni at pick 93 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Devontez Walker in the 130th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Theo Johnson at slot 174 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had cheaper options than Omar Speights at No. 212, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Zion Nelson at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
