The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Brenden Rice fell into the 126th overall pick. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a long-term starter on the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
They let Edgerrin Cooper come to them and pounced at slot 56. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Trey Benson at the 87th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Brenden Rice was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid up for Jordan Jefferson at the 174th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Myles Harden in No. 216 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 233 with a little surplus value in Frank Gore Jr.. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Dominique Hampton at pick No. 244 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
