You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with Ainias Smith in pick 105. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Williams where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 15th pick they get a problem off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Quinyon Mitchell. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Jeremiah Trotter Jr.. A minor itch, scratched.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ainias Smith this early at Round 4, Pick 5. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
James Williams slid further than he should have, and the 142nd overall pick is lovely value for the safety. A minor need, but a need all the same.
T.J. Sanders at pick 183 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Fentrell Cypress II in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
