New England Patriots

The Patriots found their guy under center in McCarthy: C.

Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.

Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Hart value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.21 · Pick 21 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise, a steep price for the projection.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
They paid up for Kingsley Suamataia at slot 42 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 54
They took Malachi Corley at par in pick 55, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 56
Xavier Worthy slid further than he should have, and the 68th overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 94
The board had Cam Hart higher than pick No. 109, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Dillon Johnson · RB · rank 170
Dillon Johnson at No. 113 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Jaheim Bell · TE · rank 163
Jaheim Bell at Round 4, Pick 36 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.11 · Pick 147 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 199
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at the 147th pick, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 224
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 7 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
R7.9 · Pick 229 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 223
Myles Cole at pick 229 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
