Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Hart value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise, a steep price for the projection.
They paid up for Kingsley Suamataia at slot 42 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Malachi Corley at par in pick 55, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Xavier Worthy slid further than he should have, and the 68th overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had Cam Hart higher than pick No. 109, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Dillon Johnson at No. 113 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jaheim Bell at Round 4, Pick 36 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at the 147th pick, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 7 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Myles Cole at pick 229 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
