Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

The Chargers ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.

They will need Williams to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 14
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Bralen Trice · DE-EDGE · rank 23
Nothing to complain about; Bralen Trice went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 34
Troy Fautanu at Round 2, Pick 5 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 61
They read the board right and Edgerrin Cooper was the payoff at the 69th overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 93
By-the-book stuff, Roman Wilson at the 91st pick squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 113
Gabriel Murphy at pick 105 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.6 · Pick 142 · Jaheim Bell · TE · rank 137
They did well to land Jaheim Bell in slot 142, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 197
Jase McClellan in No. 189 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 201
Roger Rosengarten at Round 6, Pick 27 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.6 · Pick 226 · Evan Williams · S · rank 247
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Evan Williams. It adds depth where they could use a little.
