Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the Round 6 slot on Phillip Webb, a name most had 145 spots down the list. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Harvey. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In the end it comes back to Emeka Egbuka, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 20 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 24, with Kaleb Johnson worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Marcus Mbow at pick No. 63. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Tre Harris at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Harold Fannin Jr. at No. 69 is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Ozzy Trapilo in the 106th overall pick, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Smael Mondon Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Taking Mello Dotson in No. 169 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Dayon Hayes at the 189th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Phillip Webb at pick 193 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
James Burnip at Round 6, Pick 24 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
RJ Harvey in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Ajani Cornelius at the 216th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 217 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Jaylen Reed all the way to Round 7, Pick 2, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: KeAndre Lambert-Smith still on the board at slot 232. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R.J. Mickens in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jasheen Davis. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Alijah Huzzie at pick 247 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
