Somebody in slot 186 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Kalel Mullings, the No. 103 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The Griffith reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Luther Burden III in slot 12, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tyler Warren at the 62nd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jihaad Campbell in the 76th pick, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jake Majors at No. 148 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at Round 5, Pick 31. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Jeffrey Bassa in pick 170 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Sonny Styles at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Kalel Mullings at pick No. 186 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Thor Griffith at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
The board had Shilo Sanders higher than the 247th overall pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
