There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Commanders started one anyway for Taulia Tagovailoa, 66 picks ahead of schedule.
Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The Elliss steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Legette in the 40th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Jaylen Wright in pick No. 67, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Renardo Green at the 80th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jonah Elliss in pick 100 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
Sataoa Laumea at Round 5, Pick 3 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Jaylin Simpson higher than the Round 5 slot, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good price on Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 152, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A clean, defensible pick in the 194th overall pick with a little surplus value in Cornelius Johnson. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taulia Tagovailoa in the 222nd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
