Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Karene Reid, the No. 206 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 247.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. Reaching for Williams left real value on the table behind him.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
Matthew Golden slipping to pick No. 19 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Omarion Hampton in No. 44 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Demetrius Knight Jr. at the Round 3 slot is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Deone Walker at pick 121 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Anthony Belton at slot 149 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Ajani Cornelius at Round 5, Pick 33 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylen Reed slid further than he should have, and the 204th pick is lovely value for the safety. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Tahj Brooks in the 211th overall pick, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
John Williams at slot 239 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Karene Reid in the 247th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
