Somebody in Round 5, Pick 38 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Kalen King, the No. 139 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Gray has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jonathon Brooks at pick 56 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cedric Gray in the Round 3 slot, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Kalen King here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Javontae Jean-Baptiste. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Miyan Williams at pick No. 233 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 24, with Nathan Thomas worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
