The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending slot 256 on Cal Haladay a full 45 spots early.
Landing Green that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a security blanket over the middle. A real need, handled.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in pick 37. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Braden Fiske, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Matt Goncalves at No. 106 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Jarrian Jones at the 139th overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: Renardo Green still on the board at the 183rd pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jalen Berger in the 223rd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, Cal Haladay in pick No. 256 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
