Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Quinn Ewers got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at slot 172. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Every board in the league had Nash lower, and that gap is the story.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 14 they get a premier pass rusher. More want than need.
Kaleb Johnson at No. 44 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Carson Schwesinger in the 81st pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and Cam Skattebo was the payoff at slot 116. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nick Nash this early at the 118th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jared Wilson at pick 150 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Rylie Mills in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Quinn Ewers all the way to Round 5, Pick 33, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Ollie Gordon II in the 174th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
