Washington Commanders

Quarterback settled, Maye in the fold, and a A- for the Commanders.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

Wingo has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Tyjae Spears gives the group a proven body among the projects.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Drake Maye and all.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 5
In pick 7 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 30
A clean, defensible pick in No. 36 with a little surplus value in Troy Fautanu. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 32
A tidy little value on Graham Barton in slot 37, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Adonai Mitchell · WR · rank 36
No drama and no debate, Adonai Mitchell went about where he belonged in pick No. 38. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Jonah Elliss · DE-EDGE · rank 44
A straight-up fair deal on Jonah Elliss at the 40th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 59
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Edgerrin Cooper worth more than the price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
They paid sticker price for Khyree Jackson in the 100th pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 97
Tykee Smith at Round 4, Pick 2 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 166
Frank Gore Jr. in No. 141 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 186
AJ Barner at slot 181 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Aki Ogunbiyi · OG · rank 185
Aki Ogunbiyi in pick No. 183 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Derek Wingo · LB · rank 255
Derek Wingo in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
