The Chiefs ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Chiefs indulged a want in Mustapha while a need in quarterback, running back and other spots stayed open. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Mustapha has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get an island corner. More want than need.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kingsley Suamataia. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Xavier Legette at the 64th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Baker at Round 3, Pick 32, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They liked Cole Bishop enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 96. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Foster at pick No. 115 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for McKinnley Jackson in slot 117, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Malik Mustapha while clear needs at quarterback, running back and other spots sat open.
AJ Barner in pick No. 158 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Ty'Ron Hopper in No. 170; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jordan Jefferson in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
