There is reaching, and then there is Isaac Rex at the 224th pick. The Packers jumped the board by 68 and dared it to prove them wrong. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Bertrand. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th pick they get a potential shutdown corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A wild overpay on T'Vondre Sweat in slot 41, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Graham Barton at Round 2, Pick 25 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Cooper Beebe worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, Dylan Laube in pick 125 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cam Hart at the 135th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Carson Steele in slot 203, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: JD Bertrand at pick No. 219 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Isaac Rex at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Value said wait; Cal Haladay in No. 232 says they were not listening. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They reached a country mile for Hayden Hatten at pick 246, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
