The trade table was where it all came apart. The Dolphins shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Powers-Johnson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Powers-Johnson a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 21. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Roman Wilson in the 86th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Marshawn Kneeland at pick No. 99 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Leonard Taylor III at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Logan Lee. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Andru Phillips slid further than he should have, and slot 186 is lovely value for the cornerback. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A quiet steal in the 197th overall pick: Jaylan Ford for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Kitan Oladapo was still sitting there in pick No. 199, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Nothing to complain about; Jared Wiley went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
