There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took DeMonte Capehart a full 88 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
On value alone, Lassiter makes the weekend a net positive. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let a cornerback like Kamari Lassiter reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Marist Liufau in the 87th pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Braelon Allen at pick No. 124 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaylan Ford in slot 174 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
DeMonte Capehart at No. 212 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Steele Chambers in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
