There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Dolphins started one anyway for Jayson Jones, 54 picks ahead of schedule.
Smith-Wade falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 21 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Brenden Rice at slot 90 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Jaylen Wright went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 22. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Chau Smith-Wade in the 186th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A quiet steal in No. 199: Josh Proctor for less than the market said. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Taulia Tagovailoa. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jayson Jones in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
