The Dolphins spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jake Slaughter, the No. 55 name on the board, in Round 3, Pick 26.
If Allar pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. With edge rusher, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
Makai Lemon at the Round 1 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
In No. 30 they get an island corner at a price that makes it sweeter.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dillon Thieneman at pick No. 43. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tight end of that caliber at slot 75 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at safety with edge rusher, running back and other spots open.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Dontay Corleone in Round 3, Pick 23, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jake Slaughter in pick 90 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Malachi Fields in the 94th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Connor Lew at the 97th pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Drew Allar at Round 4, Pick 30, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Isaiah World in pick 151 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Tyren Montgomery, who had no business lasting to the 227th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Thaddeus Dixon in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
