Nobody else had Bub Means anywhere near pick 219. The Packers did, by 26 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Quantity was the play, for better or worse.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Cooper DeJean at Round 1, Pick 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cooper Beebe at slot 48 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in pick 58; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Maason Smith in No. 91, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Cole Bishop at the 96th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Jones. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mason McCormick at No. 153 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tanor Bortolini. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Jaylan Ford in the 202nd overall pick, and that is fine. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They reached into another round for Bub Means, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
