You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Jaylan Ford in the 125th pick.
Getting Paul where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Keon Coleman slid further than he should have, and the 56th pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Patrick Paul in the 87th overall pick, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Jaylan Ford in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Joe Milton III at pick No. 173 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Jase McClellan in Round 6, Pick 38 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Carson Steele at pick 242 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
