New England Patriots

No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Patriots reached some 179 spots for Collin Oliver, and value like that does not grow back. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

Getting Gadsden II where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 11
In the 4th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 40
No edge and no loss on Tyler Booker in slot 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jayden Higgins · WR · rank 68
Jayden Higgins in pick 69 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.1 · Pick 103 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 86
Andrew Mukuba slipping to Round 4, Pick 1 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.4 · Pick 106 · Hollin Pierce · OT · rank 112
No drama and no debate, Hollin Pierce went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.18 · Pick 120 · Dorian Strong · CB · rank 163
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dorian Strong in No. 120, miles early. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.3 · Pick 141 · Que Robinson · LB-EDGE · rank 251
A real head-scratcher, Que Robinson in pick No. 141 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Collin Oliver · LB-EDGE · rank 323
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Collin Oliver well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.29 · Pick 167 · Bhayshul Tuten · RB · rank 151
Nice patience on Bhayshul Tuten, who had no business lasting to the 167th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.2 · Pick 178 · Ollie Gordon II · RB · rank 164
They let Ollie Gordon II come to them and pounced at pick 178. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Oronde Gadsden II · TE · rank 181
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Oronde Gadsden II in the 217th overall pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Cody Lindenberg · LB · rank 246
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cody Lindenberg. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Eric Gregory · DL · rank 276
Eric Gregory at No. 238 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
