There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Anthony Lucas, 52 picks ahead of schedule. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That Fields pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Anthony Lucas in pick No. 63, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Taurean York this early at the 95th overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Malachi Fields in Round 4, Pick 25 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Michael Trigg slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Charles Demmings at the 171st pick is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tidy bit of business in the 191st pick, where Aamil Wagner graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zane Durant in Round 6, Pick 17. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jimmy Rolder at slot 202 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 212 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Latrell McCutchin Sr. higher than pick 247, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
