Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Texans came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
Every board in the league had McLachlan lower, and that gap is the story. For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
In the 24th pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid up for Byron Murphy II at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 59 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roman Wilson. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Malik Mustapha at slot 123 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid a round early for Jaheim Bell in Round 4, Pick 27, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had Braelon Allen higher than pick No. 164, and the running back fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 239th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The roster fit checks out.
Tanner McLachlan at the 248th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
