This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Brenden Rice, the No. 113 name on the board, stolen at No. 148.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback, edge rusher and other spots went begging. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Troy Fautanu at pick No. 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 53 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
T.J. Tampa in the 66th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Value with a capital V on Tyler Guyton in pick 81, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cooper DeJean at cornerback with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open.
No edge and no loss on Dominick Puni in the 93rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Will Shipley higher than the Round 4 slot, and the running back fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, James Williams went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 30. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 33. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Cam Hart did not.
Brenden Rice in the 148th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Sataoa Laumea at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
De'Corian Clark at pick 250 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
