The Texans looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jared Wiley at the 163rd pick regardless, 33 picks early. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Texans indulged a want in Smith while a need in running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Dallas Turner come to them and pounced at pick 23. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In pick No. 24 they get a disruptor off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Fair-plus on Xavier Legette, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.

A big swing on Jared Wiley at the 163rd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Thomas went about where he belonged in pick 239. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Aaron Frost in the 247th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
