This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Sam Hartman, the No. 207 name on the board, stolen at Round 7, Pick 27. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Taylor III reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but offensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at pick 23, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
In slot 24 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy little value on Troy Franklin in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in the 58th pick, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Marist Liufau at No. 87 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Leonard Taylor III at the 90th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Khyree Jackson in pick No. 123 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Malik Mustapha at Round 4, Pick 26 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board had Braelon Allen higher than the 163rd pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Blake Watson at pick 239 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Sam Hartman at pick No. 247 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
